Chapter Twenty-Five
The sound of scratching fills my room as the doorknob turns and the door cracks open.
âCan I come in?â Laurel appears, looking soft and hopeful. Itâs annoying.
âOh look, itâs my traitor of a sister.â I cross my legs and link my fingers on my stomach, head resting on my pillow. Itâs the first time weâve spoken since our fight the other evening. My face may be calm, but if she canât feel the bitterness coming off me, then we truly have grown apart. âWhat do you want?â
She cringes and steps inside, a flowing sapphire gown hung on her thin frame. âI guess I kind of deserved that one.â
My eyebrows raise as I tip my head to the side. âYa think?â
She sighs, walking over to my bed and sitting next to me. âI know we fought, but I didnât want to sell you out. Seriously, I didnât. But there was no way I could cover for you after last night.â
âSeriously?â I say, keeping my voice as calm and reasonable as possible. Itâs harder than I expected. âYou pretty much told Mom everything.â
âI mean, can you really blame me?â she says. âYou disappeared. And then look at what happened when you went out with him the night before. Mom told me how sick you got. I could basically hear your teeth chattering from downstairs in the shop. She was incredibly close to brewing another cure-all as a last resort.â She lowers her voice. âNot to mention I still donât agree with you about the break-inâwe donât know for sure that it wasnât Liam, and we donât have any new leads. Weâre stuck, Quill, and weâre in danger. And youâre too distracted with Liam to care.â
A pang of guilt hits me again at how Iâve prioritized Liam over the garden, but Iâm not about to let it show. Iâve beat myself up enough for the last few hours, and I donât need her two cents. Itâs not like I totally disagree with her, but I still answer her with silence.
âBut I was pretty nasty the other night, and that was wrong, too,â Laurel continues. âSo let me make it up to you.â
I try to look like I donât care, but sheâs piqued my interest. âHow?â
âWell, seeing as how Iâm your new babysitter for the foreseeable futureââ
âWait.â I cut her off. âYouâre guarding my jail cell?â
She shrugs. âIâm staying here to make sure you donât go sneaking out with your boyfriend again.â
I scoff. âHeâs not my boyfriend.â Damn it, I wish everyone would cut that shit out.
She closes her eyes. âShit. Sorry. Again. That came out way snarkier than I meant it to.â
âWhatever,â I say, rolling away from her. I hope sheâll take that as her cue to get out, but unfortunately, she doesnât.
âListen. I know friendships and I know hookups, but I donât think heâs either one of those. He means something to you, doesnât he?â
âWhy do you care?â
âBecause youâre my brother and I donât want you to be unhappy,â she says. I roll back around to face her and she sighs.
