Chapter Twenty-Five

The sound of scratching fills my room as the doorknob turns and the door cracks open.

“Can I come in?” Laurel appears, looking soft and hopeful. It’s annoying.

“Oh look, it’s my traitor of a sister.” I cross my legs and link my fingers on my stomach, head resting on my pillow. It’s the first time we’ve spoken since our fight the other evening. My face may be calm, but if she can’t feel the bitterness coming off me, then we truly have grown apart. “What do you want?”

She cringes and steps inside, a flowing sapphire gown hung on her thin frame. “I guess I kind of deserved that one.”

My eyebrows raise as I tip my head to the side. “Ya think?”

She sighs, walking over to my bed and sitting next to me. “I know we fought, but I didn’t want to sell you out. Seriously, I didn’t. But there was no way I could cover for you after last night.”

“Seriously?” I say, keeping my voice as calm and reasonable as possible. It’s harder than I expected. “You pretty much told Mom everything.”

“I mean, can you really blame me?” she says. “You disappeared. And then look at what happened when you went out with him the night before. Mom told me how sick you got. I could basically hear your teeth chattering from downstairs in the shop. She was incredibly close to brewing another cure-all as a last resort.” She lowers her voice. “Not to mention I still don’t agree with you about the break-in—we don’t know for sure that it wasn’t Liam, and we don’t have any new leads. We’re stuck, Quill, and we’re in danger. And you’re too distracted with Liam to care.”

A pang of guilt hits me again at how I’ve prioritized Liam over the garden, but I’m not about to let it show. I’ve beat myself up enough for the last few hours, and I don’t need her two cents. It’s not like I totally disagree with her, but I still answer her with silence.

“But I was pretty nasty the other night, and that was wrong, too,” Laurel continues. “So let me make it up to you.”

I try to look like I don’t care, but she’s piqued my interest. “How?”

“Well, seeing as how I’m your new babysitter for the foreseeable future—”

“Wait.” I cut her off. “You’re guarding my jail cell?”

She shrugs. “I’m staying here to make sure you don’t go sneaking out with your boyfriend again.”

I scoff. “He’s not my boyfriend.” Damn it, I wish everyone would cut that shit out.

She closes her eyes. “Shit. Sorry. Again. That came out way snarkier than I meant it to.”

“Whatever,” I say, rolling away from her. I hope she’ll take that as her cue to get out, but unfortunately, she doesn’t.

“Listen. I know friendships and I know hookups, but I don’t think he’s either one of those. He means something to you, doesn’t he?”

“Why do you care?”

“Because you’re my brother and I don’t want you to be unhappy,” she says. I roll back around to face her and she sighs.
